How to choose a dog bed for the way your dog sleeps

Taupe sofa-style dog bed with raised sides

Nyla here, speaking on behalf of dogs who would like their bed shopping handled thoughtfully.

You humans have plenty to consider: colours, measurements, washing instructions. From our end, the brief starts with somewhere comfortable to lie down. The useful part is working out what that means for the particular dog in front of you.

Watch how we actually sleep

Does your dog curl into a compact little parcel, stretch right out or change position throughout a nap? Observe a few ordinary rests before choosing. I’d call that important research. You might call it watching your dog be cute.

Raised edges may suit a dog who likes to curl up or rest their head, while a flatter bed can give a stretcher more usable room. Preferences vary. The RSPCA’s dog-bed guidance recommends enough space for dogs to lie in their natural positions.

Look past the size name

“Large” sounds reassuring. It doesn’t tell me where my paws will go.

Compare the actual measurements, especially the usable sleeping area. On a bed with thick sides, the outside dimensions can be quite different from the space available inside.

When your dog is comfortably stretched out, note roughly how much space they use without disturbing them. Compare that with the maker’s sizing guide. If a measurement is missing, ask before you order. I’m in favour of fewer surprises at nap time.

Think about getting in and out

Consider the height of the entrance as well as the space inside. A design needs to suit your dog’s size and ability to move comfortably.

If you notice pain or changes in movement, ask your vet for advice. The word “orthopaedic” on a listing doesn’t tell you whether a particular bed is right for your dog or will resolve discomfort.

Check the laundry arrangement

Fur happens. So does everyday mess. Please consult the care label before either becomes a household meeting.

Check whether the cover comes off, whether the insert can be washed, and how both should dry. A spare cover or suitable spare bedding can make wash day easier.

Here’s my shopping checklist for your phone:

  • Usable sleeping dimensions, as well as overall size.
  • Entrance height and room to change position.
  • Materials and construction.
  • Separate care instructions for the cover and insert.
  • Return conditions, checked before purchase.

Give the bed a sensible address

Try a quiet spot where your dog won’t be stepped over. Some of us also appreciate a resting option near the family. Once we’re asleep, let us rest undisturbed.

My first step would be to save those measurements before browsing. For more help reading product details, visit Fit & Care.
