A dog-friendly home that still feels like you

Nyla here. I’m the dog behind House of Sploots. Small confession before we begin: I don’t actually sploot. I do, however, have a dog’s perspective on what makes a home feel good.

You humans see a beautifully styled lounge room. We dogs see somewhere to rest, somewhere to be near you and, occasionally, an excellent place to leave a little fur. I think there’s room for everyone’s priorities.

Here’s how I’d approach a home that feels like you and makes space for us.

Start where your dog already feels at home

Before you order a lovely new bed, watch where your dog chooses to settle. Beside your desk? Near the family? At the end of the sofa, if that’s allowed? We’re giving you useful information. No mood board required.

Build around those real habits. If you’re protecting part of the sofa, measure the seat, back and arms separately. A throw that looks perfect in a photo still needs to work when a dog gets comfortable.

Let the colours get along

I’ll leave the colour decisions to the household member with the shopping account. My suggestion: choose two or three colours already in your room and repeat them in blankets, covers and storage.

Sage, warm ivory and charcoal feel right at home at House of Sploots. Your own room can set the brief. Everything doesn’t have to match perfectly; it just needs to live together comfortably. Washability and a good fit deserve a say, too.

Give walk things a home near the door

From a dog’s point of view, watching a human hunt for the lead is a particularly unnecessary part of walk time.

A hook for the lead, a spot for poo bags and a towel within reach can make the doorway easier to manage. Keep the walkway clear, check that mats stay flat and put anything tempting to chew out of reach. Practical can still look lovely.

Read the washing instructions before the muddy moment

I can offer moral support. I cannot operate the washing machine.

Check whether the whole item can be washed or only its cover, which temperature it needs and how it should dry. Make sure it fits your machine. If you’re choosing a protective cover, read what the maker means by “water-resistant” or “waterproof” and which parts are covered by that claim.

Make the daily reset small

A basket for the bits and pieces, a place to hang the lead and a spare washable cover can do a useful amount of work. Start with one everyday frustration, then make that part easier.

My suggestion for today: pick one corner we share and give it a little attention. A good home is one you can enjoy living in together.
